Biography

Born in 1989, the young Austrian has been studying at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg under the tuition of Professor Michael Martin Kofler since the age of 16. Not least by winning several music competitions Daniela Koch has made a name for herself in the music world: In 2008 she won the renowned “Concertino Praga” 42nd International Radio Competition. In addition to her first prize in the flute category she also came out overall winner of all categories and was awarded the “Helena Karaskova” Prize.

As the youngest candidate she also achieved the first prize at the 7th Kobe International Flute Competition in Japan in April 2009, one of the biggest and most significant international flute competitions. In September 2010, she enjoyed further success at the 59th ARD International Music Competition in Munich. Despite being the youngest of the four finalists, she won 2nd prize as well as a special award. In the same year she was voted “Artist of the Year” 2010 by Bank Austria in cooperation with Jeunesse.

Daniela Koch has performed at various festivals such as the Rheingau Musik Festival, the Davos Festival and the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where she received the Nordmetall-Ensemblepreis in 2011.

The young artist has been chosen by Vienna's Konzerthaus and Musikverein as a "Rising Star" of the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO). In this capacity, the flautist has given recitals in such concert venues as Bozar Bruxelles, La Cité de la Musique Paris, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Luxembourg and Cologne philharmonic halls, Hamburg's Laeiszhalle and the Vienna Konzerthaus. Daniela Koch has also performed in Canada, the USA and Japan.

As a soloist, the flautist has played with such illustrious orchestras as the Wiener Symphoniker, for the opening of the Vienna Festival, and with the Radio and Chamber Orchestras of Munich, the European Union Chamber Orchestra, the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin. This season marks her debut with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.

Following scholarships at the Orchestral Academy of the Munich Philharmonic and the Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic, Daniela Koch has been Principal Flutist with the Bamberg Symphonic Orchestra under their Principal Conductor Jonathan Nott since spring 2011.

Her debut CD “My Magic Flute” published by the Gramola label recieved outstanding reviews in renowned magazines: the range of her coloring is widely pronounced, her tone is lively breathing, the phrasing elegant. Dutilleux's Sonatine and Taffanels Fantaisie sur le "Freischütz", the highlights of this debut CD, bring all these skills to bear with brilliance. (crescendo).

Daniela Koch was recently invited by Daniel Hope to take part in his CD project “Musik aus Sanssouci”, published last year by Deutsche Grammophon, to which she has contributed, among other pieces, the Flute Concerto by Johann Joachim Quantz.
